What is XML?

eXtensible Markup Language aka XML is a markup language, designed to store and transport data. It is a self-descriptive representation, which is recommended by W3C. Since XML is a markup language similar to HTML, it is governed by a set of rules called as schema which describe how XML should be contructed. It was a most popular choice for client-server communication and is still used by Web Services.

What is JSON?

JavaScript Object Notation aka JSON is a lightweight format for storing and transporting data. It is often used in the client-server communication when the client needs to send data to the server and viceversa. JSON is widely used as a present-day data representation standard because of its "self-describing" and easy to understand nature. RESTful services use JSON as their data format.
